Peridot, also known as Chrysolite, is a unique yellowish-green transparent gemstone which occurs in only one colour, olive-green, with variations in intensity and tint depending on the iron concentration. It is found in certain types of volcanic rock and some meteorites. It is one of only two gems formed in the molten rock of the upper mantle instead of Earth's crust. Gem-quality peridot is rare on Earth's surface due to its susceptibility to weathering during its ascent to the surface. Peridot is one of the birthstones for August.

Peridot has been prized since the earliest civilizations for its claimed protective powers to drive away fears and nightmares. It is believed by some superstitious people to carry the gift of "inner radiance," sharpening the mind and opening it to new levels of awareness and growth, helping one to recognize and realize one's destiny and spiritual purpose. It opens, cleanses, and activates the heart and solar plexus chakras and releases "old baggage." Burdens, guilt, or obsessions are cleared. Peridot teaches that holding on to people or the past is counterproductive, and shows you how to detach yourself from outside influences and look to your own higher energies for guidance. If you have done the psychological work, peridot assists you in moving forward rapidly. This visionary crystal is particularly helpful to healers.

Psychologically, peridot is thought to alleviate anger, jealousy, resentment, spite, and stress. It enhances confidence and assertion without aggression. Motivating growth, peridot helps to bring about necessary change. It assists in looking back to the past to find the gift in your experiences and shows how to forgive yourself. This stone promotes psychological clarity and well-being. It is attuned to the attainment of spiritual truth and regulates the cycles of life.

Healing-wise, peridot is said to have a tonic effect and to regenerate tissues, strengthen the metabolism, and benefit the skin. Peridot is thought to aid the heart, thymus, lungs, gallbladder, spleen, intestinal tract and ulcers, and to also strengthen the eyes. Placed on the abdomen, it is purported to aid in giving birth by strengthening the muscle contractions but lessening pain. Its energy is thought by some to balance bipolar disorders and overcome hypochondria.
